EVENT: 77th Annual Produce Show Schedule 2025

A warm welcome to the annual show to all our members and friends,

Our Annual Produce Show is open to all , adults and juniors, you do not have to live in Aylesbury or be a member of the society, but just pay 25p per class.
For all inexperienced showers there is always help and advice available from more experienced exhibitors. Please do not hesitate to ask.
Staging times are 7.15pm – 9.15pm on Friday and 7am – 10.30am on Saturday.

After the success last year we will be running photography and art sections again, classes 133 to 137.  And please check quantities and measurements for each class as some have been changed.

Show schedules and entry forms will be available in printed form at the Thurston Trading Store in Old Stoke Road Allotments, HP21 8DF shortly or alternatively you can download the forms below.

Section 1 – Vegetables - Louisa Field Memorial Challenge Cup. 

Class - Open to all. See rule 9.
1. Collection of Vegetables. 5 distinct kinds, quantities as per classes 3-27. Max width 36”
2. Collection of potatoes. 3 dishes, 4 each dish
3. 5 potatoes, white of any shape.

Section 2 – Full Members class.
Open to all FULL members residing in the TOWN of Aylesbury. Entry free.

Section 4 – Floral Art. 
(Flowers and foliage need not be home grown) Certificate for best in section.

Class. Open to all (see rule 9).
78.  An arrangement titled. “ All Things Bright and Beautiful”. A niche is available if required, accessories, drapes etc. permitted.
This exhibit can be by one or more arrangers. A club or society. Prize money 1st £10, 2nd £8, 3rd £6, 4th £4
79. An arrangement using 3 flowers, can include foliage. 
80. Novice only (see rule 17). Arrangement of mixed flowers and foliage in an unusual container. 


 

Section 5 – Dahlias. 
NDS Silver and Bronze medals. William Feltham Memorial Challenge Cup.
America’s Cup (Class 88). Maurice Dedman Trophy for best exhibit in class 96 and 97.

151. One jar of Honey, at least 8oz.
152. One jar of marmalade, at least 12 oz
153. One jar of soft fruit jam, at least 12 oz.
154. One jar of fruit curd, not less than 8oz.
155. One jar of stone fruit jam, at least 12 oz.
156. One jar of jelly, not less than 8oz.
157. One jar of chutney, not less than 8oz.
158. One jar of anything pickled (except onions or shallots), not less than 8oz.

For any of the above without a given recipe, please use your own favourite recipe.
Jars must not show any advertising, including on the glass. Lids must not show any dates or  printing.
Jars should show date made.
Fruit curds must not be sealed with a metal twist top lid, cellophane should be used instead.
Please note, pickles and chutney should be matured for at least 3 months before showing.


Class 150. - Chocolate Brownies.

185g (6 ½oz) unsalted butter  185g (6½oz) dark chocolate broken into pieces.
3 eggs 275g (9oz) caster sugar.
40g (1 ½ oz) cocoa powder 85g (2 ¾ oz) plain flour.
50g (2oz) white chocolate chopped 50g (2oz) milk chocolate chopped. 


Melt the butter and dark chocolate together. Whisk eggs and sugar together until pale and double original volume. Pour cooled chocolate into egg mixture and fold gentle together until mixture becomes mottled dark brown. Sift cocoa and flour together over mixture and fold gently until nice and fudgy. Stir in chopped chocolate. Pour into 20cm (8”) square tin. Bake at 180C 350F gas mark 4.for 25mins until surface has papery crust. Adjust for fan oven. Leave to cool completely in tin. Then cut into squares


Class 144. - Victoria Sandwich

6oz (170g) margarine 6oz (170g) caster sugar
6oz (170g) self-raising flour 3 eggs


 Cream margarine and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time with 2oz of flour. Put into two 7” sponge tins. Bake for 20-30mins at 190ºC, gas mark 5, 375ºF. Adjust for fan oven. When cold, sandwich together with raspberry jam and sprinkle top with caster sugar.


Class 146.- Shortbread. (Round)

170g butter 150g, plain flour
65g corn flour 125g caster sugar


Cream butter and sugar together. Slowly mix in plain flour and corn flour. Kneed together and press into 20cms (8”) ring. Bake for 35/40 mins at 160`c. 325F, gas mark 3. Adjust for fan oven. Dust with caster sugar.


Class 141. - Tea Bread

350g (12 ½ oz) dried mixed fruit 270g (9 ½ oz) self raising flour
200g (7oz) dark brown soft sugar 2 eggs beaten
1 tsp ground cinnamon 350mls strong tea


Cover the fruit with the tea and leave to soak overnight. Mix in all the other ingredients. Bake in a loaf tin at 170C, 330F gas mark3 for 1 ½ hours. Adjust for fan oven. Cool on a wire rack

 


 

Section 11 –Ian Mortimer Master Gardener Award.
Judging will be on excellence of quality.

Class 164 - Open to all. (See rule 9)
Your exhibit should comprise four items. At least one item must be taken from each of the following lists. (Max width allowed 30”.)

List A
• 2 gladioli
• 3 dahlias
• 3 chrysanthemums, sprays, or stems.
• 6 annuals
• 3 roses
• flowering pot plant
• foliage pot plant

List B
• 4 potatoes

Section 12 – Junior Classes. 
Aylesbury Gardening Society Junior Shield.
Exhibits must be the unaided work of the exhibitor, whose age must be stated on entry card.


Class -  Open to all under 14 years of age. No entry fee.
165. 5 Cornflake Cakes. Up to aged 10 years.
166. 5 Brownies or Blondies, Aged 10 and over. (Own Recipe) 
167. Photograph. Wellies
168. A coloured picture, any medium, A4 sized.
169. Flowers for the one you love.
170. Person or animal made from vegetables/ fruit. Cocktail sticks permitted.
171. Vehicle made from Lego. Own design
172. Egg person or animal in an egg cup.
173. A Lifeboat made from recycled material.


 

Section 13—GROW FOR SHOW

Class
175. Dahlia. One vase, 3 blooms.
Grown from specimen bought from the Thurston Trading Store.

Rules for exhibitioners

1. Exhibits must be the property of the exhibitor. All horticultural exhibits must have been in the possession of the exhibitor at least 2 months before the SHOW. Any prize money obtained contrary to this rule will be forfeited and awarded to the competitor next in merit in the same class. Gardens of the exhibitors are liable to inspection at any convenient time before or after entry. 
2. Number of entries allowed. A competitor may not enter or stage more than one exhibit in each class. 
3. Entry forms. All entries must reach the show secretary not later than the Wednesday before the show date. Telephone entries may be accepted if time permits. Postal entries accepted from long distance exhibitors to arrive by first post 18/09/24. (Cheques made payable to Aylesbury Gardening Society).
4. Entry cards. Exhibitors must apply to the Hon. Show secretary for their exhibit cards upon arrival. These cards must be placed face downwards on or in front of the exhibit prior to being judged.
5. Any question arising as to the proper status of an exhibitor shall be referred to the committee, whose decision shall be final.
6. Staging. Staging may take place 7.15-9.15pm on the evening prior to the show and may commence at 7am on the morning of the show. The hall must be cleared for judges at 10.30 am. No exhibit may be removed before the end of the prize presentation, but the hall must be cleared by 6pm.
7. Prizes. The judges may withhold any award in any class in case of insufficient competition or indifferent production, but additional awards may be made by the committee as far as funds allow for any exhibit recommended by the judges. Prize monies not collected on the day of the show will be donated to show funds.
8. Liability for loss. The committee will not be responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits from whatever cause arising. Every care will be taken by officials, but all exhibits must be shown at sole risk of the respective owners.
9. Entry fees. For all paid up, full members of the society entries are free. A full member must live in the Town of Aylesbury, Post codes HP19,20,21. For associate members and all others, entry fee is 25p per entry.
10. Points. Awarded: 4points—1st; 3pts—2nd; 2pts—3rd; 1pt—highly commended. In the event of a tie on points the winner will be the one with the most first places.
11. Protest. In exceptional circumstances four members of the committee summoned by the show secretary shall have power either before or after the decision of the judges has been given to declare any exhibit disqualified, and their decision shall be final. Any protest must be lodged in writing to the show secretary not later than 3pm on the day of the show, and must be accompanied by the fee of £1, returnable at the discretion of the special sub-committee.
12. Decisions. The committee reserve the right of interpretation of all rules and regulations. Any emergency not provided for by these rules shall be dealt with by the committee and their decision shall be final in all cases.
13. The preparation of vegetables for exhibitions. All vegetables must be properly prepared for exhibition by washing only. The use of oil or any polishing process is strictly prohibited. 
14. Flower classes. Exhibitors in these classes must see that all stems reach the water, except in floral arrangements. Colour variety is allowed except where otherwise stated. No imitation flowers or foliage allowed. Floral Art Section flowers and foliage need not be home grown.
15. Plates and vases to be provided by the exhibitor. 
16. Cups/trophies will be signed for and held for one year. Cup/trophy holders must inform the show secretary if they change their address or if cups/trophies are lost or damaged. Cups/trophies must be returned to the show secretary or the trading store on a Sunday morning in a clean condition by the last day of July before the show to ensure they are engraved for current year.
17. Novice only. A novice is an exhibitor who has not won a first prize in section entered. 
18. Longest runner bean train is 4 beans to be measured without stalk, straight and without straightening, i.e. not around the curves. 
19. Maximum sizes in all classes to be adhered to.
20. Annuals (section 18 page 24 RHS Horticultural Handbook). Flowers raised from seed during the last 12 months prior to the show.
21. Prize giving will commence at approximately 4pm.

DUE TO A CHANGE OF ENGRAVER, PLEASE RETURN TROPHIES TO THE SHOW SECRETARY OR THE GARDEN STORE ON A SUNDAY MORNING BY LAST DAY OF JULY SO THAT THE SOCIETY CAN HAVE ALL TROPHIES ENGRAVED.
